What to do in the next 10 minutes
- Put the phone face down. Do not draft inside the live conversation.
- Write the message exactly as received, then write only its literal request.
- Separate urgent facts from emotional hooks.
- Draft a reply in The Echo Box, where it cannot be sent by accident.
- Choose after the timer: no reply, a delayed reply, or one factual reply.
Four very different texts
“Hey” or “How have you been?”
This gives you almost no information. You do not need to supply the meaning, urgency, or emotional labour that the message left out.
“I miss you”
The sentence may be sincere and still not answer what has changed. Missing each other and being able to build a workable relationship are different questions.
A practical request
If they need a key, document, pickup time, or bill decision, keep your answer narrow. Avoid adding a relationship conversation to a logistics exchange.
An apology with no request
You can receive an apology without responding tonight. Notice whether it names specific behaviour and responsibility, or mainly asks you to comfort the sender.
When a reply may be necessary
Reply when a shared responsibility or genuine deadline requires it. A useful practical reply can state the fact, the action you can take, and the time. You can also choose a safer channel or involve an appropriate third party for formal, legal, or safety matters. No contact should never be used to ignore an immediate safety issue.
What not to decide from one message
- That they want to rebuild the relationship.
- That not replying immediately will ruin your only chance.
- That a calm tone proves old patterns are gone.
- That your racing heart is evidence you should answer.
Draft the reply where it cannot send
The Echo Box is a free ten-minute breakup reset in your browser. No login is required, nothing is sent, and any saved draft stays in local browser storage on this device.
