Should I text my ex happy birthday?

You can care about the date without sending a message. Before texting, ask whether you would still send it if you knew the reply would be a single “thanks”—or no reply at all. You hope they will remember your birthday later

That turns the greeting into an unspoken trade. If the future return message matters, the text is carrying more weight than “happy birthday.”

You bought a gift before the breakup

Owning the gift does not require delivering it. Decide about the object separately from deciding whether to reopen contact.

When contact may actually be necessary

A birthday itself is not usually a practical necessity. Contact may still be needed for shared-child plans, a scheduled handoff, work, property, money, or an urgent safety matter that happens to fall on the same date. Keep that message about the necessary issue rather than combining it with emotional birthday contact.
